Day Trip routes that we recommend:

Route 1 - Once you are passed the industrial corridor off the Queensway, the Carp Road North through the Carp Hills is very scenic and attractive throughout the season, from Early Spring to Late Fall. Bear in mind that we open at ten a.m., every day, seven days a week during the summer months. Also along this route you can take the time to visit the Diefenbunker. This underground complex is the site of where the Government of Canada was to remain safe and still active in case of a nuclear attack during the cold war years. It is worth the visit.

Once passed the Diefenbunker, you are now driving along the western edge of the locally famous Carp Hills. The scenery is second to none and the deer population along this route is large and often spotted along the many pastures and woodlot edges. The descendants of many of the valley's early settlers still own and work the local farms. As you drive along this curving road you should see if you could spot re-introduced fishers and wild turkeys. There is an abundance of deer and coyotes and wolves have been seen on occasion as well. Better yet, see if you can be the first to catch a glimpse of our legendary and elusive cougar(s), (which many have claimed to have heard but never seen.)

Along the way you will cross over the Carp River as it winds it way through this valley to its final destination; the Ottawa River. This is where you will find Fitzroy Harbour. Once in the village of Fitzroy Harbour, you are within view of Penny's Fudge Factory and minutes away from the Fitzroy Provincial Park, which is located along the northern edge of the village.

Surrounding the village of Fitzroy Harbour are the communities of Willola Beach, Woodridge and Vydon Acres. Vydon Acres is the site of a Mississippi Conservation Area's Walking Trail and a great opportunity and location for avid fishermen to try their skills as well. Fitzroy Harbour is just minutes away from the Ferry Road. During all seasons except winter, this Ferry crosses the Ottawa River to Quebec and docks at Quyon. From there you can drive all the way back to Gatineau and Highway 148 links you to many communities such as Shawville, Luskville, Campbell's Bay, and the many other villages in the Western Gatineau Hills Region.

Route 2 - Another of our favourite routes, whether you come from Ottawa or Carleton Place area makes for a great day trip. You can drive west from Ottawa along Highway 7 to Carleton Place. Once in Carleton Place, their downtown core has many quaint and attractive shops that are of interest to any day-tripper.

After an hour or so on foot in the heart of Carleton Place, hop in your car and head north to Almonte, along Highway 29 (formerly Highway 15). Once in Almonte, you will find a very attractive downtown core, worth the visit as well.

After an hour or so on foot there as well, head north once again on Highway 29 to the Village of Pakenham. Once in Pakenham take the time to stop in at Scoops' Famous Ice Cream Shop or the Pakenham General Store for some delicious baked goods. There is also a famous five-span stone bridge and a little park along the Mississippi River for all to stop and enjoy.

Your next destination is to Fitzroy Harbour. Once again follow Highway 29 north until you come to the turn-off to the Galetta Side road. Turn right (east) onto that road and follow it across Highway 17 until you come to the attractive little village of Galetta. There is a privately owned power dam located on the Mississippi River that creates quite the falls when the river is running high in the Spring. You will continue east along the Galetta Rd, passing Vydon Acres. Vydon Acres is the site of a Mississippi Conservation Area's Walking Trail and a great opportunity and location for avid fishermen to try their skills as well. Fitzroy Harbour is now only minutes away, east along the Galetta Side Road and the site of our famous Penny's Fudge Factory.
